Fixing the Out-of-Phase Subwoofer Issue in the Kia EV6: A Simple 5-Minute Upgrade
Owners of the Kia EV6 have recently uncovered an interesting (and surprisingly impactful) factory wiring issue: the vehicle’s subwoofer appears to be wired 180 degrees out of phase. When a speaker is wired in reverse polarity, the cone moves opposite of what the audio signal intends—resulting in an effect similar to noise cancellation. In practice, this means significantly reduced bass response, even though the hardware itself is fully capable of much deeper performance.
It’s unclear whether Kia is officially aware of the issue or intends to issue a service bulletin. What does seem consistent, however, is that nearly all EV6 models are affected, including my own, purchased new in April 2022. After testing the theory myself, I confirmed the reports: the subwoofer was indeed wired out of phase, and correcting it produced an immediate and dramatic improvement in low-frequency output.
The good news?
The fix is easy, fast, and completely reversible. Most DIY-minded owners can complete the correction in under five minutes.
How to Correct the Subwoofer Wiring
Follow these steps to access the subwoofer compartment and reverse the wiring:
- Open the rear hatch.
- Lift the storage compartment cover in the cargo area.
- Remove the two plastic screws securing the trim plate at the threshold where the hatch closes.
- Gently pull off this plastic trim piece to expose the subwoofer enclosure behind it.
You should now see the factory wiring. It will look something like this:
If your wiring matches the above, all that’s required is to reverse the polarity of the black and red wire pairs—effectively swapping each wire with its counterpart on the connector:
Once the wires are reversed, simply reinstall the trim panel, plastic screws, and storage cover. Close the hatch and fire up your audio system.
The Result
The change is immediately noticeable. Bass becomes fuller, deeper, and far more present—exactly what the EV6’s audio system should have delivered from the factory. For many owners, this quick fix transforms the entire listening experience.
If you’ve felt underwhelmed by the EV6’s low-end performance, this simple correction may be the upgrade you didn’t know you needed.
Turn up the volume and enjoy the sound your system was always capable of.
